Those individuals who are aiming to earn the NREMT (National Registry Emergency Medical Technician) certification are required to go through the examination process. The NREMT is a non-governmental body, which is saddled with the responsibility of administering the EMT exam which is based on the guidelines of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It is essential to mention that the NREMT certificate is quite different from the EMT license that an individual acquire from their state. The state where you operate offers you the EMT license but you still have to go through the certification process to earn NREMT. There are forty-six states that currently utilize the NREMT exam to evaluate the readiness of the students for one or more EMT certification levels. The purpose of NREMT is to independently recognize the EMT individuals who have fulfilled the educational requirements of NREMT and have demonstrated the required skills of EMT in the compulsory exams and tests.
The NREMT exam is made up of multiple-choice questions. Each question has four possible answers but there is only one answer that is the best. All the tests offered by NREMT are computer based and they are conducted in the CAT (computer adaptive testing) format. This format of testing adapts or modifies the level of difficulty of each question based on how you answer the questions. At the beginning of the test, you will receive an average question. As you correctly answer it, you will be given more challenging questions. If you answer the previous question incorrectly, you will be given an easier one. There is no general number of questions that all candidates have to answer; it all depends on how you progress in answering the questions correctly. Some students have reported answering about 70 questions while some others – up to 130. With this format of exam questions, the applicants are not allowed to return and change answers to preceding questions. Each question must be answered before you proceed to the next.
The candidates can expect to receive their results within twenty-four to forty-eight hours of taking the exam. The result will be available at the website of NREMT. In case you do not pass the test, you will have the opportunity to retake it after fifteen days.
