SAT is an admission exam that is designed to be used by colleges and universities to evaluate the academic strength and readiness of potential students for college. The test serves almost the same purpose as the ACT exam. These standardized tests are usually used for an admission process in academic institutions. The scores are used in addition to other standardized factors, such as class rank, high school grades, recommendations, extracurricular activities, and community service. The purpose of the exam is to evaluate the candidate’s abilities in the core areas of mathematics, reading, and writing. The SAT scores vary between 200 and 800 for each section with a potential passing score of 2400.
The major areas of the SAT test are Mathematics, Writing, and Critical Reading. Many of the exam questions are multiple choice but there are some grid-in questions that can be found in the Mathematics section. The students will also be required to write an essay in the Writing section of the exam. There are a total of ten sections in the whole test. The first section is made up of an essay with a total of 25 minutes for its completion. The sections two through seven last 25 minutes each while the sections eight and nine are 20-minutes areas. The section ten is a multiple-choice writing segment and a total of ten minutes is allotted for its completion.
The SAT exam is available seven times in a year and it is administered only on Saturdays in the month of January, March, May, June, November, and December. Majority of high school students sit for this test for the first time in the spring of their junior school year. A large percentage of candidates also take the exam for the second time in the fall of their junior school year. The individuals are required to pay series of fees during the process of registering for the test. The basic payment of $50 is applicable for the SAT registration. However, the subjects’ fees differ, depending on the number of tests that one will be taking and the type of exam. Generally, the subject payments are a one-time fee of $23 per registration. In addition to this, an extra fee of $23 for a language test or $12 for a non-language test is also applicable.
